Urban Consumption of Charcoal and Its Implications on Deforestation in Puntland, Somalia

The study investigates charcoal consumption in the cities of Puntland (Somalia), focusing on its implications for deforestation and forest-resource sustainability. Drawing on field data and community surveys, We identify urban demand for charcoal as a key driver of tree-loss, especially around agricultural-forest interface zones. The research highlights how proximity to urban centres, weak regulatory frameworks and lack of alternative livelihoods combine to accelerate forest cover change. We call for coordinated policies that couple community-based forest management with incentives for sustainable energy alternatives.
