Prevalence of diabetes foot ulcers and associated factors among adult diabetic patients in three referral hospitals in Mogadishu, Somalia
This cross-sectional study, conducted between August and November 2022 across three major hospitals in Mogadishu, Somalia, assessed the prevalence of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) among 193 adult diabetic patients. The study found that 15% of participants had a DFU. Importantly, being overweight or obese increased the odds of developing a DFU by nearly 4.6 times, lacking family support tripled the risk, and not regularly checking one’s feet nearly doubled the likelihood. The authors underline the need for coordinated health-care efforts—including patient education on foot care and support systems—to reduce DFU incidence in Somalia’s resource-limited context
